To keep your air conditioning system in peak performance, The system will require servicing every 12 – 18 months.
Part of the system is a receiver dryer, which has the following functions:
To filter out any impurities and therefore protect the compressor.
It contains a desiccant to absorb the small amounts of moisture that are present in the system.
The system has a reservoir for excess liquid refrigerant.
After a period of time/use the filter cannot perform the above functions as efficiently. Servicing becomes necessary not only to optimize performance but also to check for any potential problems before they occur.
An air conditioning service takes approximately 2 hours and consists of the
Following:
- Check pressures and vents
- Check temperature prior to service
- Check all controls including air distribution
- Analyse gas de-pressurise system, measure amount recovered
- Replace drier and o rings, add correct oil
- Visual check of condenser (clean with compressed air)
- Visual check of air con hoses (routing and condition)
- Visual check of compressor mounting brackets
- Visual check of compressor drive belt tension/condition
- Evacuate and re-charge system
- Check vent temperatures and pressures
- Check condenser fan operation
- Check all electrics and controls
- Check drainage tubes
COMMON AIR CONDTIONING PROBLEMS
Air conditioning not cold enough
The air conditioning system in your vehicle is not usually covered by most manufacturers’ service schedules and the refrigerant gas that is used to operate the system depletes over time. On average most vehicles lose up to 15% per annum, the problem can be caused when the system is not used during the winter months allowing the small ‘0’ ring seals to dry out resulting in a gradual deterioration in system performance.
This will eventually result in the system to not operate at all.Air conditioning smells odd.
If you notice any strange odours when you put on your air conditioning this could be signs of a bacterial build up in your system.
As a system becomes older or used infrequently the air con system can develop bacteria, micro organisms and even mould or fungi growing in the system evaporator.
This can lead to some very unpleasant odours. Some even claim this can result in headaches and flu like symptoms sometimes referred to as sick car syndrome.Air conditioning systems can be treated effectively with an antibacterial treatment that destroys the bacterial growth and leaves your car smelling fresh again.
